Metropolitan Meets with Chief Minister of Kerala

On Thursday, September 20th, His Grace Zachariah Mar Nicholovos, Metropolitan of the Northeast American Diocese, represented the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church at the ‘Rebuild Kerala’ event at the Crowne Plaza in Suffern, New York. 

The event was held in the distinguished presence of His Excellency, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister of Kerala, India.  His Excellency spoke at length on the suffering of our people as a result of the devastating floods in Kerala.  Updates on the rebuilding phase of Kerala by the state government, under the leadership of the honorable Chief Minister, were given directly by His Excellency.  

Metropolitan Nicholovos who also spoke on the occasion, reflected on his first hand experience of the devastation caused by the flood.  His Grace touched upon his own personal emotions seeing his hometown of Mepral, and his own ancestral home submerged by the Kerala Floods.  

The strong leadership, and response of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church was also recognized.  Upon the order of His Holiness, every church, monastery, and pilgrimage site of the Malankara Church which was not affected by the floods, was to become a relief camp for those displaced by the calamity.  His Grace shared of the Malankara Church’s immediate response to not only raise financial support, but also commit to the building up homes, and support other aspects to ensure Kerala is rebuilt, and is stronger than ever. 

On behalf of the Kerala state government, His Excellency, conveyed his appreciation to the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church for the immediate response of the Church.  His Excellency conveyed his appreciation to our Diocesan Metropolitan, the clergy and faithful of the the Northeast American Diocese, who have been actively engaged in offering immediate assistance to the Kerala Flood Relief efforts.
