Metropolitan to Participate in WCC Central Committee
His Grace Zachariah Mar Nicholovos, Metropolitan of the Northeast
American Diocese, departs to Geneva, Switzerland this evening for the
Central Committee meeting of the World Council of Churches.
His Grace repesents the Malankara Orthodox ...Syrian Church, at the
chief governing body of the WCC until the next assembly. At its first
full meeting, from July 2nd to 8th, the committee will review WCC
programme planning for 2014-2017. The theme of the meeting is
“Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace”, reflecting the final message of the
10th Assembly.
The Central Committee is elected by the Assembly from among its
delegates and serves as the chief governing body of the WCC until the
next assembly, meeting every 12 to 18 months. It is responsible for
carrying out the policies adopted by the Assembly, reviewing and
supervising WCC programmes and adopting the budget of the Council.
The World Council of Churches, is a worldwide fellowship of churches
seeking unity, a common witness and Christian service, was formed in
1948. The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, is one of the founding
members of this ecumenical organization. The WCC continues to bring
together churches, denominations and church fellowships in more than
110 countries and territories throughout the world, representing over
500 million Christians and including most of the world's Orthodox
churches, scores of Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist and
Reformed churches, as well as many United and Independent churches.
His Grace was elected as a Central Committee member of World Council
of Churches during its 10th Assembly held in Busan, Republic of Korea,
which took place from October 30th to November 8th, 2013.
